PULSE.

Storytelling, analysis, and intelligence for Africa's AI future.

Ideas shape policy. Narratives shape power. The conversations taking place about AI today will determine who benefits from these technologies tomorrow.

PULSE is WATA's media, knowledge, and storytelling platform. It is where we publish, amplify, document, and analyse the issues shaping AI, data governance, surveillance, digital rights, and community power across Africa. Through articles, podcasts, videos, interviews, reports, and media coverage, PULSE ensures that community voices are not only part of the AI conversation but help lead it.

PULSE serves as both a knowledge repository and a platform for public engagement, helping to translate complex debates into accessible insights while showcasing community perspectives, lived experiences, and emerging solutions.

The WATA Gathering

Africa's monthly gathering for data, power, and AI justice.

Connecting communities, intelligence, and action to shape how AI works, who it serves, and who benefits.

The WATA Gathering is the platform's flagship monthly convening space, bringing together community leaders, activists, researchers, policymakers, technologists, funders, and civil society organisations working at the intersection of AI, data, rights, and social justice.

As AI systems increasingly shape public services, employment, healthcare, migration, security, and civic participation, communities need more than information. They need a space to make sense of rapidly changing developments, exchange experiences, identify emerging risks, build collective strategies, and strengthen their ability to influence the future of AI in Africa.

Held monthly, The WATA Gathering serves as a continental forum for intelligence sharing, learning, dialogue, and movement building. Each session features updates on major developments in AI governance and technology, a thought leadership presentation from a guest speaker, and facilitated discussion focused on implications for communities across the continent.

The Gathering also provides a platform to showcase emerging evidence from WATA's five pillars, including developments in data governance, algorithm audits, surveillance monitoring, AI policy processes, and community economic participation. In doing so, it connects local experiences to continental trends and creates opportunities for collective action.

Beyond knowledge exchange, The WATA Gathering is designed to strengthen relationships between communities facing similar challenges, support peer learning across countries and constituencies, and ensure that community perspectives remain visibly strong within debates that are too often dominated by governments, corporations, and technical experts.

Through regular dialogue and collective reflection, The WATA Gathering will help build a pan-African community of actors committed to ensuring that AI serves the public interest, advances human rights, and contributes to a more equitable digital future.
